Jake started taking gymnastics lessons in 1983 at Ridgewood and advanced to the competitive team with a young classmate named Jeremy Kramb. Before they had completed elementary school, Ridgewood closed down the boys program. Jake and Jeremy remained friends but joined two different gymnastics clubs in the Dallas area. Later they reunited with other gymnasts at Lake Highlands to win the 1997 High School State Title.
After high school, Jake walked onto the University of Oklahoma Sooners’ gymnastics team and competed on the pommel horse. He earned the NCAA top 20 by high score on that event and qualified to the 1998 NCAA Division 1 Championships. In the summer of 1999 Jake withdrew from OU and elite gymnastics. He graduated afterwards from Texas A&M with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2002 and began a career in public education.
Jake coached competitive gymnastics and taught high school mathematics for seven years. As a person battling cystic fibrosis (CF), he retired from teaching in 2009. He and Emily, his wife of 5 years, are preparing to take the next step with his CF through the UT-Southwestern Lung Transplant Program. Although his condition is not improving, Jake remains positive and stays involved part time in his family’s company, Moran Capital Group, LLC. He is also a member of BSF International and First Baptist Dallas.
Together with his lifelong friend and former teammate Jeremy Kramb, now the owner and head coach at Ridgewood, Jake is helping part time to strengthen and expand their boys program.
Rachel has been coaching gymnastics for more than 15 years. She joined Ridgewood in February, 2010 coaching recreational and competitive team gymnastics. Rachel began her gymnastics career at the age of 3 and competed for over 12 years. Following gymnastics, she continued to excel in sports through varsity basketball, track & field, cheerleading and cross-country.
Headed for a scholarship in the 300-hurdles, she placed 3rd at Regional’s in 2000 as a freshman, and qualified as the only female athlete selected to compete in Arkansas’ National High School Indoor Track & Field Invitational in January of 2001, along-side several Junior-Olympians.
Unfortunately, less than a month later in February 2001, she suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident, and spent the next year in rehabilitation to recover. Following her recovery, she attended Austin College where she graduated in January 2007, with a double-major in Exercise & Sports Sciences, and Communication Arts (Media & Theater).
Rachel is USAG Safety Certified, and continues to enjoy doing gymnastics skills during her spare time. She is also CPR certified, Zumba Instructor certified, AFAA Personal Trainer certified, and AFAA Spin Instructor certified.
Rachel credits her gymnastics experience for her athletic abilities throughout the years, and believes it aided in her speedy recovery from her injuries in 2001.
